Hukusyuen garden is a Chinese style garden located in Kume, Naha-city. It was built for the 10th anniversary of the friendship agreement between Naha and the city of Fukushu in China. This is why it was entirely made by craftsmen from Fuzhou, from the planning to the actual construction.

Naha-city and Hukushu city has a close relationship, the history is very long. People came from China were called “Kume-sanjurokusei” and lived in Kume have been built strong relationship with people living in Naha. People still think this relationship is very valuable and memorable so they starded to build the garden as Kume-sanjurokusei consider their home, and to increase people's cultural living, to make more places for people to take a break.

• 

  Summer Scenery

  There are 3 themes at the garden. Spring scenery, Summer scenery, Fall and Winter scenery. The area where you see at first when you enter the garden is the Summer scenery of the mid area.
  Tou tower and the Hakutou tower towards each other and they welcome the visitors to the garden.
  The next you'll see is a big pillar which has a dynamic dragon's engraving. Inside of the tower, a big pot and model ship of China are also exhibited.

  Spring Scenery

  Spring scenery is located at the east area next to the Summer scenery area. The area has flowing water and the sound heals the visitors to the garden. Stone-built animals at the Ryoharou look like they are about to move! You can see willow trees , the willow leaves moving in the wind heals the heart of visitors.

  Fall and Winter scenery

  If you go rear of the stone wall at the entrance, you'll see the fall and winter scenery area. Enjoy the dynamic water falls.
  If you turn left at the entrance, there is Summer and Spring scenery area. If you turn right, you'll see fall and winter scenery area. All three areas are connected. If you want to see the water fall first, turn right.
  The back of the water fall, you can enjoy the water dropping from above. You can climb the tower so enjoy the garden view from the highest spot.

History of Fukusyuen garden

The fgarden symbolizes the relationship between China and Okinawa. The garden is reently accomplishd. In 1992 September, the garden was built for 10th anniversary of the friendship agreement between Naha and the city of Fukushu. The garden shows the architecture of Fukushu and is the symbol of frienship between Chinese people and people lived in Kume village.

The garden is anout 8,500m2 and composes “Sanbu area”, “Shikihukou area”,”Hachidai keikan area”, “Hutachisensui area” and “1 Shukairo area”.

The garden conpose 明(Mei)穏 (On)華(Ka) three areas and show the seasonal scenery with trees and flowers. The Three mountain area (Uzan mountain, Uizan mountain, Binzan mountain) and the two towers (Hakutou tower, Utou tower) are representating the scenery of Fukushu architecture. All the architecture made with wood, their entrance towards to the cardinal points and are defferent from ecah gates.

600 years ago, Ryukyu kingdom started tradeing with China. Ryukyu dedicated products to the Chinese dynasty and Shina return grant. This way of trading was called “Sappou” and they made a master and servant relaionship. From this relationship Ryukyu was confer a title from chinese emperor and was acknowledged as a King of East asia. Because of this, Ryukyu Kingdom placed at international society way earlier than main land Japan.

During that time, people with special abilities were included as grant from Chinese enperor. They were called “Kumensanjurokusei”. The name “Sanjuroku-sei” means that There are 36 family names. Hence, people say that 36 families came from china or it is just Chinese adjective means “many”. In any case, Many Chinese peopke from Fukken came to Ryukyu island. These people made a village called “Kume village” where the “Ukishima” is. People in Ryukyu thoufht the ability they had is very precious and valuable.

Most of the “Kumensanjurokusei” had the ability of vessel. So they are used when Ryukyu government went to china for trading and hundreds of years Kume village people served for the Ryukyu government. The great statesman “Saion” wass one of them, People from Kume village built related to Ruykyu development for many years. Nowadays there are about 20-30 thousand descendants of Kume village are in Okinawa.

The stones and woods for the cnstruction were delivered after processing in Fukken syou In China. To make 140 thousand miles, 3 ships of stones and woods were shipped to East china Sea. Staff from Naha-city went China to check the materials. They checked the condition of wooden architecture and joints of stones and once the checking is done they tacked down and ship to the boat. Once the construction started 10 technical exparts and Okinawam craftsman worked together.

20 years from the construction, all the trees and plants has presence atmosphere and you can enjoy the beautiful collaboration of the building and the plants.
