Masahiro brewery is a famous sightseeing spot where you can see the process of making sake. It's in an accessible place. You can try the sake they have at the shop.

Do you know that there is a brewery where you can taste awamori sake for free in Itoman-city? It is about 15 minutes from Naha airport . Not only locals but also tourist visit there to enjoy the sake tasting. There are free parking lots availble. At the masahirogallary, you can enter for free and taste sake for free. If you want to take a bus , it will be 15minutes walk from the closest bus stop, but it's worth to do it.

    How to enjoy Awamori

    Okinawan old sake, 古酒 is called "Ku-su" in Okinawan dialect. Kusu is a sake which more than 3 years. You can enjoy making your own Kusu by aging it by yourself. For on the rocks, with water, soda, and also with Hirami lemon, Jasmine tea, regular tea, and even milk or coffee. There are many ways to enjoy your Awamori sake. If you want to taste the Awamori itselt, you should try the on the rocks!

    During the prewar days, Awamori was inherited for over 300years from 1662-1722 during the Ryukyu kingdom era. Umfortunately the acient Awamori was desappeared from the war. You can not taste the aicient Sake any more but now at the Masahiro brewery, you can get the 10 years old Kusu which the old Kusu was blended "Gotouma" 43 % alcohol and has a rich smell. It is limited sake. The sake got prize of "Monde Selection" past 3 years except for the 2016 selling rest, it has been awarded during 2008-2017. (Picture: 10 years Ku-su : Ryukyu kingdom)

Masahiro gallery is located in Itoman-city Okinawa. In 1883, it was opened as "Higa brewery" in Shuri. During that time, the people who can make Awamori were only people who obtain permission from Ryukyu government. Awamori was a very special alcohol then. However, All the special important ancient Awamori was destroyed from the WWⅡ. Many Awamori factories were burnt from the fire. The factory moved to Yonabaru town after the war, In 1967, for built a new factory, they moved to Shuri Ishimine. They made and inherited the base of the traditional awamori making technique.

In 1991, To celebrate the 100th of the brewery, they moved the factory to Nishizaki Itoman city. Now when people hear Awamori, they think Masahiro. Masahiro's awamori is loved by local Okinawan people and fascinated tourists to Okinawa as well. Nowadays many tourists come from Taiwan and China and enjoy the awamori tasting and field tour at the factory.

The ingredient of Awamori is Rice and black rice malt. They wash the rice and put the black rice malt and make the malt. Add yeast and water to the malt and wait to mature them for 10-14days. then distill the malt, the extraction of the alcohol is the Awamori. After that, they add the extraction with water, filtration, aging. from the product the way will be different. They let awamori age till the taste gets mellow and rich. Awamori tastes a littele similar to Rice Sho-chu. They don't use the second ingridient, you can taste the rice and malt.
