Nakamura house is an historical building that inherites old Okinawan lifestyle. Free parking lots and cafe is available at the center.

Nakamura house that is a symbol of an good and old days of Okinawa was built in around mid 18th century. The house survived through the harsh battle of Okinawa miraculously and it was designated by the Ryukyu kingdom as the traditional Okinawan residence in 1956, as important cultural property by Japanese government in 1972. The owner of the house was Ugaji who was a upper classes farmer. Hence there are barns at the house on site. You can see the stone fences for keeping pigs and the goddess of fire is deified. The stone wall made from Ryukyu lime stone and Garcinia spicata trees are surounded the house to protect the house from typhoon wind. The house has a culm atmosphere. The state of preservation of the house is very good. You can enter the house to observe.

    During the Ryukyu kingdom era, from the influence of trading with Japan and China, people started to adopt the method of architecture. They adopted the method of not using nails by learning Japanese style, and the feng shui from Chinese style. People adopted the good points from both countries like they use red roof tile to mathes with Okinawan humid weather.

    There is Shisa sitting on the vivid red roof tile. There are livingroom, bedroom, and room for buddhist altar. There is a cottage separate from the main building. It was used to welcome the officers from Ryukyu government when they are visiting for inspection. moreover, there is a fire god called "Hinukan" is deyfied at the kichen called "Tunguwa".

    There is no gate at the main building. Hence, they used a sheer wall to seperate the gate and house. Other than that, the wall is also good for sunshae, protection of strong wind, and also prevention from bad evils. Some people say that Chinese wall was inherited to Okinawa. The sheer wall towards at the southeast the spot which gets damage from the typhoon the most. Back then, Men used the right entrance and women used the left entrance across the wall.

A little tidbits about Nakamura house

After you observed the house, you can have home-made brown sugar jelly and tea at the Nakamura house souvenir shop. The jelly is so delicious especially when it's hot. It has mellow and bitter-sweet taste. There is a recipe of how to make the jelly, it's recommended to try making at home!

At the souvenir shop, you can get Okinawan traditional artworks such as, pottery,minsah weaving, Uji-zome(sugarcane dyeing). Moreover, if you are interested in okinawan music, there are CDs at the shop so please check out! You can enjoy shopping and having a break at the souvenir shop!

Koi fish are swimming at the pond in the garden. There are tables and chairs you can sit and relax. It's recommended to sit at the table and see the Nakamura house in a distance. You may feel the eternal time from the past to the future.
