Ryukyu-mura has Registered Tangible Cultural Properties because the houses have stood the tests of time and survived. They still resemble traditional Okinawan style houses of the old days. In fact the whole village still has the atmosphere of the earlier days of Okinawa.

One of the most visited tourist destination in Okinawa is the Ryukyu mura. It's a very popular spot among tourists where you can enjoy the atmosphere as if your were in Okinawa during the early 1800s. There are free parking lots available. The historical Okinawan houses were relocated to the village and the oldest houses were built in 1808 such as the Nakasone house, Kokuba house, Tamanaha house, Hanashiro house and, the Shimabukuro house. The whole atmosphere will change once you pass through the attraction site and you'll feel as you traveled back in time! The biggest Attraction here is the buffalo pulling the gear to squeeze the sugarcane.

The Kijimuna house
Kijimuna is a spirit with a old folks told by the Okinawan people. They live in the banyan tree and look like 4-5 year old children with red hair. Kijimuna is also considered to be a guardian god. If you are lucky, you may be able to see them. It is said that they are mystical but there are so many witnesses who all have claimed to have seen them.

Ryukyu Glass Craft making
Ryukyu Glass is an art glass. It is said that you can't make the same glass sculpture again. The glass you make is the only glass that will ever look like it in the world. What bubbles and colors you pick for your glass is completely up to you. They are very colorful and very popular among Okinawan people. The glass sculptures are usually used for drinking Sake.

Shisa Craft making
Shisa is a guardian god ideology that was brought from China many years ago. There are boy Shisas and girl Shisas. The one opening its mouth is the boy and the one closing its mouth is a girl. The boy Shisa catches the demon(called Majimun in Okinawan language) and protects people from disaster. The girl Shisa catches the luck and holds it in her mouth and never lets go.
How to enjoy Ryukyu village

Ryukyu mura is located at Onna village the northern part of Okinawa and is a popular tourist spot. It is about 50 minutes from Naha airport by car and the place is easy to find. Ryukyu mura is a place where you can enjoy the atmosphere of Okinawa in the 1800s. Since you are visiting Okinawa, this is a place you can't miss.
You can enjoy the old Okinawan houses, glass craft, watching and, dynamic Eisa play. The Okinawan red tile roof is one of the highlights. You will hear the sound of Okinawan instruments (Sanshin and Taiko) anywhere inside the park. The sound and scenery will make you feel like you traveled back in time. The village is separated into the free area and the charged area. It's highly recommended to stop by at the sugar gear area. In Okinawa, there were many sugarcane factories in early Showa era(1929~1941). The buffalos pulled the gear to squeeze the sugar and boiled it to make brown sugar. In 1623, the first brown sugar was made from sugarcane. If you are lucky you'll be able to see the buffalo pulling the gear.
At the making and experience section, you can make shisas and try on Ryusou costumes. They are very popular events! Ryusou costumes are special clothes during weddings, mostly bride wear. You can take pictures wearing the beautiful clothes! For shisa making, not only kids but also adults can enjoy making their own Shisa. Each Shisa is different and you can make your own unique shisa! The shisa will be your own guardian god! Ryukyu mura has a large selection of souvenirs. You can enjoy shopping for a special souvenir!
